Shane Turpin has revealed he’s hoping to set a new lap record on his electric Brammo during qualifying at Laguna Seca today.
The current record stands at 1’31.194, which was set by Steve Rapp on his Mission motorcycle in 2011, and Turpin feels that time is well within Brammo’s reach.
‘I believe we can do 31s, it is just about getting the bike set up correctly,’ says Turpin. ‘I didn’t go full out yesterday and we have added a little bit more spring to the bike because the data showed that I was using a lot of the front forks.
‘We have stiffened up the front end a little and we’re going to run the same tyres I used in practice for qualifying tomorrow because they worked really well.’
However, setting the new lap record may come at a price for Turpin.
When the riders arrived in the paddock yesterday, Eric Bostrom had a gift for his Brammo team mate, a pair of JT vintage race shoes. It has been a running joke since then that if Turpin wins this weekend then Bostrom will be taking the shoes back.
‘That’s funny,’ exclaims Turpin. ‘Eric picked me up from the airport and he had on some vintage JT racing shoes and they were awesome so I said “Dude, you have to get me a pair of them” so he got me some shoes. They’re great but I definitely want the fastest lap time over the shoes!’
